The S50B32 inline-six is one of the most celebrated engines ever produced by BMW M GmbH. Introduced in 1995 as a development of the earlier S50B30, it represented the definitive version of the M3 E36 through to 1999.
Displacement reaches 3,201 cc thanks to a bore of 86.4 mm and a stroke of 91 mm. Quoted power is 321 bhp (236 kW) at 7,400 rpm, with maximum torque of 350 Nm at 3,250 rpm. The rev limiter intervenes at 7,600 rpm.
For its era, a specific output of 100 bhp per litre from a naturally aspirated production engine was an extraordinary achievement — no turbo, no supercharger, just pure engineering.

Double VANOS:

One of the S50B32's most important features is the Double VANOS system (Variable Nockenwellen Steuerung), acting on both camshafts — intake and exhaust. This optimises valve timing according to engine speed, improving both cylinder filling at low revs and power output at high revs.
The result is an engine that does not sacrifice everyday drivability on the altar of performance: the S50B32 is progressive and manageable below 3,000 rpm, but transforms completely above 5,500 rpm, where the metallic, crystalline sound of a high-revving naturally aspirated engine becomes its most distinctive acoustic signature.

The engine's character is typical of the finest BMW inline-sixes: a linear and predictable power delivery that transforms into something extraordinary in the upper rev range. No sudden turbo surge, but an organic, musical crescendo that culminates in a uniquely metallic, crystalline sound.
Unlike turbocharged engines, the S50B32 conceals nothing: it responds instantly to throttle input, without turbo lag, without electronic filters dampening communication with the driver. It is one of the last engines of an era when power was won through pure engineering, not forced induction.
In this specific example, the engine has never been dismantled and is today in perfect operating condition — a direct testament to the quality of the preventive maintenance received over nearly three decades.
