production sequential gearbox
SMG stands for Sequential M Gearbox — the first automated sequential gearbox ever fitted to a production car. BMW introduced it on the M3 E36 in 1996, drawing its operating logic directly from the Motorsport division's Formula 1 experience.
Before the SMG, a driver who wanted to change gear without a clutch pedal had to buy a racing car. With the M3 E36 SMG, this technology became available in a production car for the first time in automotive history.
The 1996 introduction date lies more than a decade before today's common dual-clutch gearboxes. VW DSG, Porsche PDK, BMW DCT — none of these existed at the time. The M3 E36 SMG was the absolute pinnacle of technology.
Technical
operation
Technically it is a six-speed Getrag manual gearbox whose single-plate clutch is operated not by the driver's foot, but by an electro-hydraulic actuator controlled by a dedicated electronic control unit.
The driver selects gears via the sequential lever in classic motorsport fashion: push forward to downshift, pull back to upshift. There is no clutch pedal: the entire clutch opening and closing sequence is managed electronically in fractions of a millisecond.
Unlike modern dual-clutch gearboxes, the SMG has a brief torque interruption during gearchanges — just like a conventional manual, but executed by the ECU rather than the driver's foot.
